IMAGINE: Caitlyn’s Poem About Life With ME/CFS

IMAGINE

by Caitlyn From Ben Lomond, CA

Imagine if someone told you
your life would never be the same
happiness, joy and laughter
turned to darkness, sorrow and pain

Imagine if someone told you
there was nothing you could do
to turn your life back around
and be the same old you

Imagine if someone told you
“there is no cure for this”
would you live your life all the same
or weep for the things you’d miss

Imagine if someone told you
your freedom would be taken away
from running, jumping and playing
to wheeling yourself away

Imagine if someone told you
you could never be like them
they’re normal, healthy and hardy
while you’re sick in bed

Imagine if someone told you
that no one would understand
the pain you live in daily
or the life you wish you had

Imagine if someone told you
your life would never be the same
would you fight for everything you once had
or let this sickness take you away.

Caitlyn, Your poem is wonderful. Thanks for sharing this message that is so familiar. I live in Maryland now but come from Ben Lomond, and go home often. I want you to know, as you rest and learn some of your body signals that you will find better days ahead. We have lives that are different from what we expected, but we will develop new strengths. I expect that you have some dark days, and then unexpectedly will find a giggle. Hang in there, a silver cloud is cloud is going to find you. I hope one day soon, you will find times that do not hurt as much. With much love, and many hugs and kisses.

I am from Boulder Creek and now live in Santa Cruz. Such a small world. Thank you both for sharing your stories!

@Lolly, thank you for sharing your observation. I have experienced the same too but still the poem tells the dark side of our illness.
